I'm an outdoor enthusiast masquerading as a quantitative marine ecologist. My research interests revolve around evidence-based management and conservation in the marine environment. I like to use field experiments, big datasets, and statistical modelling approaches to tackle questions about aquaculture sustainability and threats to imperiled wildlife.
As of September 2023, I'm an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Davis, based out of the beautiful Bodega Marine Laboratory. Much of my current research investigates the effects of environmental stressors on the marine survival of wild salmon, in partnership with the Pacific Salmon Foundation. As I settle in California, my lab and I will also begin research in local systems, including collaborations with the White Abalone Captive Breeding Program to help save endangered abalone.
I'm incredibly lucky to be involved in many non-research endeavours that I'm passionate about. I co-authored the new Pacific Salmon Field Guide (info below). I provide western science support for the Mamalilikulla, ‘Namgis, and Kwikwasut’lnuxw Haxwa’mis First Nations as they manage (and transition away from) salmon farms in their territories. I also serve on COSEWIC, where I help assess the conservation status of marine fishes for listing under Canada's Species at Risk Act. Lastly, I'm on the board of directors for Salmon Coast Society, the field station at which I feel in love with marine ecology.
The Pacific Salmon Field Guide
I'm so excited to announce the release of the Pacific Salmon Field Guide, the final product of a seven-year journey with my co-author Martin Krkosek. I can proudly say this is the most comprehensive salmon guidebook ever published, covering seven species across five life stages. It's highlighted by 92 stunning illustrations from the peerless Joseph Tomelleri and beautiful photography from Tavish Campbell. The book is available to purchase directly from the publisher, on Amazon (CA or US), and many other stores.
